Answer

Statistics derived from the School’s Census for this period were published annually in Statistics of Education (Schools) which are available in the library. They are not on open access but you can request them in advance via the online link.

The statistics are presented in different categories, e.g. type of school, gender, age etc. Also number of pupils in various types of school within individual Local Education Authorities are listed. You won't find individual schools listed in this publication however.

The National Archives (http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/) which is the UK Government’s official archive hold the data from this census.  A quick search on their website found this which you may find useful: http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/displaycataloguedetails.asp?CATLN=3&CATID=5732&SearchInit=4&SearchType=6&CATREF=ED+267&j=1 – it seems to suggest the datasets from 1975 are online, but you’d need to contact them re: accessibility of the earlier ones.

If you want to find out which schools existed and therefore would have completed returns at this time, you will find a complete list of the UK’s schools  in a publication called ‘The Education Authorities Directory and Annual’  and that directory will indicate the various types of school (e.g. grammar, secondary modern, etc.), by name, under each local authority. This was published from 1902 although our holdings start in 1949.
