You can do this if you have not unlinked the citations in the original document.  See screen-shot below of the 'unlink citations' option. 

Check to see if the Zotero codes are still in your original document by going to the citation and putting your cursor on it - it should show grey - as in the example below (which is in the Chicago style):

If the citations in the original document are not grey, then the citations have been unlinked. Only you can do this by clicking on the 'unlink citations' options - and you may have inadvertently clicked on this option.  

If they are grey, then you can copy the text to another MS Word file and continue working with Zotero as normal.
