There are a number of services in place for part-time students, whether they are based in the UK or abroad.  Some of these include the following:

Access to Electronic Resources

The Newsam Library has a vast Digital Library which is made up of eBooks, eJournals and eDatabases (which index these journals).  In addition, the Library is also responsible for maintaining and making available research output by the Institute's teaching staff and researchers and this is freely available in IOE-Eprints and for the creation of a digital archive of official publications called DERA which stands for Digital Education Resources Archive.

Ongoing Support via LibAnswers

If you require support, there are a number of ways in which you can contact us:

  • Send us a query on LibAnswers (as you have!) or simply interrogate the LibAnswers database.
  • Email the Library Enquiry Desk via email at
  • Text us at or by SMS on (442) 033-221810

Postal Loans and InterLibrary Loans Services

You may want to consider setting up an account for postal loans - see the Postal Loans and Photocopies Service guide and a register for the Secure Electronic Delivery (SED) service from the British Library - see guide on InterLibrary Loans. The SED service will enable the BL to send all the articles that are not in the ILL and available in digital format directly to your desktop.  Of course, there are charges for these services but both services are heavily subsidised by the IOE.

Freely Available Open Access Resources

In addition to IOE-Eprints and DERA, there are a number of Library Guides that provide links to open access resources - see for example the Research Skills guide and the guide on International Education.

In addition to the guides listed above, the are a number of guides that are instructional - see for example the guides on bibliographic software management systems EndNote, Mendeley and Zotero and the guide on Bibliometric Measures and Citation Searching  In addition, the Getting Started guide has useful pages on searching, finding and accessing information resources and links many of the guides together.

Research Support

Finally, Nazlin Bhimani, the Research Support & Special Collections Librarian provides support via email, Skype (IOELibrarian), from the Enquiry Desk and on LibAnswers. Please contact her via LibAnswers if you need additional support in locating appropriate information resources.

Tip!  You may want to conduct your searches, including searching the catalogues of Other Libraries before you come back to London.  This will allow you to manage your time more effectively whilst you are in the U.K.
