You can use social media in your dissertation! If your paper is not going to be published, using social media posts like Instagram or Twitter is protected under the 2018 Copyright Law exceptions. You can learn more on our page on Copyright exceptions.

If you are planning on publishing, you will need permission from the account owner first. Getting permission is an important part of ethical research.

If you are quoting from a post, it will count towards your word count. However, if you are screenshotting a post, it will be a table and will not count towards your word count.

Each tweet, video or Instagram post should be in your bibliography, even if you pull multiple posts from the same account. This is so you can include the key elements of each post, including its unique URL.

To learn more about referencing Instagram and Twitter posts using APA, visit our Libguide page on referencing Twitter. You can cite Instagram and Twitter the same way. We have a similar guide for Harvard.

Referencing Youtube is very similar, but with some slight differences. You can check out our Libguide page on referencing Youtube using APA, or our page on referencing Youtube using Harvard.
